Not By Chance - A historical write-up of Nauru Chess

Nauru Chess History,

Write-up by Rene Dube CM

Friday -July 05 2024

It was not by chance that in October 2018 at the Butami Chess Olympiad in Georgia, Ricko Depaune became the first Pacific Islander ever to be awarded the FIDE Master chess title. Neither was it by chance that, at the same event, Rene Dube would become the first Nauruan Candidate Master. In the eighth round of the tournament, having been undefeated in his first five games, Ricko Depaune, for the briefest of moments, statistically become the highest ranked player in the world. None of this was by chance. The 2018 Chess Olympiad in Georgia had been Nauru’s first foray into the international Chess arena and against all expectations, the small Pacific Island state took a swing, punched well above its weight and shook the world. All these achievements had been the result of a well thought out strategic plan that had been centuries in the making. A chess move so great that newer generations of Nauruans have yet to fully experience its repercussions. A move made by the late Ruben Kun.

The History of Nauru Chess

To understand the history of chess in Nauru is to understand the history of Nauru itself. From its very inception in 1968, chess had been intertwined into the tiny island nation’s destiny as young Nauruan leaders, through sheer force of will and passion, forged for themselves and their countrymen a new republic. The young Nauruan leaders who had honed their scholastic knowledge and political ideas in Australia had been exposed to a variety of sports and recreational activities which they brought back home with them. It may be well known how Australian Rules Football was introduced and became Nauru’s national sport but very few recall that chess was also one of the activities that returning leaders enjoyed playing socially, often competing amongst each other. HE the late honourable Kenas Aroi would spend flights to official meetings playing against a computerised hand-sized electronic chess board that allowed him to perfect his skills whilst HE the late honourable Ruben Kun amassed a small library of chess books whose knowledge he gleaned and unleashed upon his colleagues with devastating effect.

Upon his retirement from politics, former President Ruben Kun hosted weekly chess events at his residence for all Nauruans, regardless of background or association. It was Ruben who first arrived at the realisation that Nauruans had a natural affinity for chess. He observed that not only did Nauruans have an innate understanding for solving complex tactical problems, but that they also possessed something very much unique to the Nauruan culture - An irrational desireto defeat their opponents.

With this understanding the former President created what is now known as the Nauru Chess Federation (NCF). In its infancy, the federation struggled to be recognised nationally as a legitimate sport and Ruben had to contend for its inclusion. Needless to say,  he eventually succeeded in his goal. Once legitimacy was established as a recognised sporting organisation, the next step was to have Nauruan players compete in international events.

Unfortunately, time and health would become too great of an obstacle for Ruben as he would sadly pass away on …….. For his friendship and many contributions to chess, players continue to gather for the Rubens Cup, held annually on his birthday.

After his passing, the game of chess went into decline and this is where Nauru’s chess history would have ended, had it not been Ruben’s foresight.

In 2014, a message was received by the remaining members of the NCF which had become defunct in Ruben’s absence. The Oceania Chess Association had, unbeknownst to the other members of the federation, been in discussions with Ruben about his secret application for the NCF to join the International Chess Federation (ICF). Unaware of Ruben’s passing more than a year earlier, the ICF was  seeking confirmation of NCF’s desire to join the ICF. The NCF quickly reorganised itself knowing that an opportunity to play internationally had presented itself. The former President had made preparations for their chess aspirations to yet be realised. With the help of the Oceanic Chess Association and with the bulk of the heavy lifting having already been done by the former President, the NCF were clear to step onto the World competitive stage and would do so in Georgia in 2018.

Unsatisfied with their accomplishments in Georgia, they competed again in 2022 in Chenai, India with Yoshi Harris securing a provisional Candidate Master and David Dabuae securing a provisional Fide Master title. This would be the first time Nauru would break into the top 10 teams of their division and come within reaching distance of an Olympiad medal. In 2024, the Nauru Chess Federation plans to introduce its first ever women’s team to the Olympiad in Budapest.

Nauru Chess continues to grow with younger participants having the opportunity to learn through school programs that the NCF have organised with Nauru College. It is said that in 2036, should India win the bid for the Olympics, Chess will be included as an Olympic sport. If that is the case, then the NCF stands ready to once again take a swing and shake the world. None of this is by chance.

Nauru Constitution 2017 Chess Tournament

Nauru Constitution Chess Tournament - May 2017

Believe it! The Nauru Chess Federation has hosted its first National Tournament using the Swiss Pairing System to determine who the Champions would be out of 23 hardened national players.

The tournament rules of play was a standard 9 round swiss pairing, an official FIDE rapid chess ratings draw (That was a mouthful).  Each game was clocked at 25min per-side with no increment. Mr Ricko Depaune was placed as the Tournament Arbiter to oversee each/every game.

Our gratitude goes to Capelle and Partners for putting up their hand to have the event venue sponsored by the Bay Restaurant, a very pleasant battle ground, that included subsidized costs for refreshments and cold drinks.

Scotty vs Jeremiah
Top Players were paired off in 9 Round Swiss Pairing
The games started off with ease as the pairing system automatically generated opponents of each player and subsequently paired them off according to their performance in each round.  This means that the winners played against other winners.

It was vital that every player must have a FIDE number to enter the tournament. The NCF had to ensure that every known player was notified, even those who had somewhat left their chess-awesomeness dormant.

Invites and promotions were processed to any and all interested  wannabe chess champion.  Calls, text and even home visits to each player was carried out to get their details for prior registration into the online FIDE rated list.
You can find the final Nauru registered May 2017 list here on the FIDE site.

Near forty players were registered online, but as life on Nauru would have it, not all of the registered turned up for the tournament event. The tournament draw was finalized with 23 players. This is a good turnout considering past tournaments.

There are more players out there, and be assured that they will be registered with a FIDE number in the days ahead. You included dear interested reader.

NCF announced at the tournment that they have finally received the 50 chess sets, and 25 clocks with the assistance of the Direct Aid Program (DAP) granted by the Australian High Comm in late 2016.

NCF announced that these chess sets will be distributed to members of the Nauru Chess Federation who have paid their annual membership, for safe keeping as symbol of membership.

The sets will also be used in local district/community tournaments and schools as part of NCF's DAP proposal to productively mould the minds of kids, youths and women to become analytical and decisive thinkers. Chess can help develop rational thinking and discipline impulsive characters! Believe it!  Gone are the days of Stone/Paper/Scissors to find out who will be white, and opponent probability of random pairings.

The FIDE endorsed Swiss Manager software generates pairings by ratings and performances of players each round, providing a complete and fair pairing list for the next round, each round.

RONPhos 2017

RONPhos National Chess Tournament (30JUN2017.USP.NR)
– Idorodoro me kababur Ouwak -

The 2017 RONPhos Handover day was earmarked by the Nauru government as the launch date and event for the celebrations of Nauru’s 50th Anniversary (of its Independence by January 2018).  This launch was themed “Idorodoro me Kababur ouwak” It means “fully immersed in a festivity spirit and unbridled dancing, singing and feasting in jubilation” Well that’s my take of what it means and if you think you can provide a better translation you may do so in the comments.

Independence day for Nauru was gained in 1968 and its golden Jubilee is a few months away, Yes look it up on Wikipedia or something, the story of Nauru’s history and her adventures through her annuls is quite fascinating, the Ronphos Handover also has a pretty interesting history, but this blog segment is about Chess and not Nauru history.

For NCF the Ronphos-Handover meant 1: Women’s open tournament and 2: Novelty games at the National Carnival. NCF had decided to do both on separate days. Friday 30th June for the Tournament and Saturday 1st of July for some mini-blitz round robin matches during the Carnival.

Our executive committee went about looking for sponsors to eventuate its first ever Nauru Women’s Open FIDE Chess Tournament and sadly came short due to the fact the fiscal year was closing and budgets for most of our supporters were well spent with none to spare.  Not only was the support required had fallen short but also the number of interested Women to participate in the tournament was less than three individuals (I know right? Where are our female strategists?). Even the organising of venue failed. (Sounds bleak aye? Well it’s not as bad as it sounds)

Anywho.. to tell a long story short.. Due to the lack of Women stepping up to the challenge, NCF defaulted the tournament to a National Open Championship. Yes, all challengers were welcome.
Venue:   Not RONPhos training centre, they offered to provide the venue but communication deteriorated in terms of unforeseen demand on the key people at Ronphos.  Although we were somewhat forgotten, the NCF was fortunate enough to have good friends in high positions and Alamanda Lauti was one of them. The USP patio as the tournament venue was approved by her without hesitation, in her own words “When do you need it?..  The Patio is Yours!”

NCF would like to thank Mrs Alamanda Lauti the Director for Nauru USP for her kind support, a passionate individual dedicated in building characters and moulding minds to become great.  She believes that Chess is one sport that provides mental discipline, defines temperance and hones analytical thinking in developed players. Anyway for more info on our good friend Alamanda..  look her up on Facebook or something, the story of Alamanda and her contribution to society is another fascinating story that would be worth your time, and we can write a lot here about her but this blog segment is about Chess.
Friday 30th June – USP Patio 5:30pm – Open National Chess Tournament.

The Tournament event commenced at USP Nauru, Patio, Aiwo, 6pm in a 5 Round Swiss Chess Pairing, 25min a side, no increments and it will be a FIDE standard rapid chess ratings. Tournament ranking results will contribute to the selection scores for the Olympiad Chess Championship 2018 Georgia.

FINAL RANK STANDINGS

Mr Yarsir Mohammad has taken the national championship again.

I know, but its natural for you to feel indignant that Nauru is being massacred by Myanmar (aka Burma) all over the chess board.

But!! at the same time you are also quite glad that “there exists a player” pitted against our top elites, a player who shows a class above our discipline, our patience and our will to win, because It ultimately means that ‘if we are to send players to the Olympiad in 2018.. then we have to go through Yarsir first’.

The runner-up went to Thubalkain Dabuae. An incredible upset against most active players as Thubalkain only woke up from his months of deep slumber in the realm of Chess unleashing carnage against seasoned players including his brother, the formidable Chess lord David Dabuae who suffered a massive blunder in his attack and was consequently humbled into submission.

The sweet Miss Vandella Gadeanang is no sweet thing when it comes to Chess, She is relentless and brutal with every move. She is the only female chess player in Nauru that can slap around most men across the Chess Kingdom. In her case “Chess Queendom”, she walked away with the third prize booty leaving behind a trail of defeated men.

Congratulations Champions!! maintain your rule at the top and beware, because there are many vengeful vows being muttered by the losers.. and they will be coming for your thrones in the next tournament.

At this point NCF would like to mention our supporters who have “come through” with in their sponsorship. It is with much relief that their support was available.

Eigigu Supermarket                        Shopping Vouchers
DIGICEL                            – Phone Credit Top-up Vouchers
NUC                                    – Power Kwh Top-up Vouchers

The above supporters have not failed to provide sponsorship in the past 3 national tournament!!  Awesome!!  Tubwa kor Ouwak.

The Chess Federation had to tap into the treasury to supplement the prizes with CA$H for our champions. Tubwa NCF!!

The event concluded with all players invited to a banquet at the Kasuo Restaurant, compliments of NCF, All enjoyed their fill and exchanged appropriate words of usurping the title of champions.

Saturday 1st June – Chess Novelty Games
The Carnival was on the way by 10am.. at the Aiwo Oval (aka tigers oval)

First the long boring speeches.. then the Marching bands.. Then power races.. The Wrestling.. The tug-0-wars..
The cultural races.. Stage performances… Powerlifting.. Ball sports.. and many other novelty games where T-shirts, Sweets and great prizes were given to successful participants. Yep, it was a “full-on” exciting time for locals.. but not as exciting as Chess!! In a little blue tent was the most exciting activity of all, Minds ticking at over 5000mhz per second, analysing, strategizing and taking calculated risks with every move, it was awesome!!

{Insert Image: Does anyone have any pics?? any pic of the carnival will do}

NCF was allocated one small tent and we were bent on offering 5 tournaments with sponsored vouchers from Utilities power and Digicel Nauru.  Unfortunately the chairs did not arrive and the next best exciting thing was implemented.

Three chess boards was laid out on the single trestle, one board had a 6 move puzzle on it, the second had a 4 move puzzle on it and the third had either 1, 2, or 3 move puzzles laid out. Many young ones came about and made their move, and many were sent away because they did not have the genius we were looking for.

You should have been there, maybe you are the genius we are looking for.
The smart ones who solved the chess puzzles walked away with their novelty prizes, T-Shirts, Candies, complete NCF chess boards and a bright smile on their face.

An hour after midday, the invitation challenge was announced over the carnival microphone. The challenge was to beat NCF’s top players in a single game of chess. The NCF top player would be allocated a 5 minute handicap on the clock against 10 minutes for the challengers.

The prizes of digicel phone-credit top-up vouchers, and NUC power top-up vouchers was awarded to each winner.

Out of every 3 challengers against NCF, one walked away with a voucher of their choice, all smiles.  NCF was quite impressed with the players and have recorded each name andcontact details of all our winners, with a warning that they will be notified of up-coming National Tournaments.

The Nauru Chess Federation decided that Tournaments should be held for Nauru at least every 2nd Month each year to provide a minimum of six national tournaments per-annum.  The following Calendar was proposed and the RONPhos Women’s Open Chess Tournament was placed within the NCF national schedule.

1. January 31st – National Open                      -Nauru Independence Day
2. March 31st – National Open                        -Rubens Cup Chess Championship
3. May 17th – National Open                           -Nauru Constitution Day
4. July 1st –Womens Open / National Open    -RONPhos Handover Day
5. Mid August  (An event date is still under consideration with the NCF executive)
6. October 26th –National Team Open             -Nauru Angam Day

For those interested to be in the tournaments, keep in mind that all national days are earmarked by NCF as dates to implement Chess Championship Tournaments. Next on the Calendar is Angam Day 2017.. so keep your skills honed and your eyes out for the next national tournament. You may contact the Chess Federation at ricko.depaune@gmail.com for further info.

Nauru Chess Federation Obtains first Licenced Arbiter

Nauru's First Licensed Chess Arbiter - (National Arbiter -FIDE)

Mr Ricko Depaune has become the first Licenced National Arbiter for the Nauru Chess Federation and was the appointed Chief Arbiter for the Nauru Rating Tournament held in Nauru -April 2017.  Also see our blogspot story for the rating tournament.

NCF President in on TV with Ratings Officer Jamie Kenmure
Jamie Kenmure, the Ratings Officer for Nauru did not just bring Nauru the opportunity to get a FIDE rating.  He provided Nauru the opportunity to gain qualification as Arbiters.

Arbiter??
Arbiters are Chess referees, they monitor tournament games and can disqualify or award players based on FIDE rulings.  The Arbiter seminar was held over one day with the ratings officer going over the fundamentals of game play and tournament rules.  An exam was provided the following day and all...  Yes ALL eleven of the attendees passed.

Each of the participant can now purchase an FA-License which would be recognised as FIDE official.

Ricko Depaune, also the NFC President is currently the only licensed Arbiter on Nauru. This responsibility had excluded him from the ratings tournament as FIDE policy for any Chief Arbiter of a running tournament cannot participate as a player.

NCF had also managed to set up a meeting with Madam Secretary for Education Dr Maria Gaiyubu. Jamie Kenmure had to dress up in his best suit, and put his presentation face on to convince the Doctor to support introducing Chess into the school curriculum.  Fortunately the Secretary already understood the potential of Chess as an early education tool to build young minds to become more disciplined, focused, analytical, forward thinking and efficient problem solvers.

Jamie also visited the Nauru Airlines Country Manager Limay Uera to express that support for NCF will reap benefits in promotions at the Chess Olympiad in 2018.

NOC was full flat out occupied with ONOC consultants all week and could not slot in NCF to discuss support NCF as an accepted member of the FIDE, ACF and OCC.  Marcus Stephen the President of NOC offered his apologies and advised that NCF forward our queries and recommendations to the NOC General Secretary.

It had been near two years in the making, but it finally got made, A historical reckoning within the annuls of the Nauru Chess Federation was acknowledged only by the few Nauruans who have become the first to be registered as officially NCF rated players in the FIDE rating list.

The “rating list” will be available on the FIDE website when it is updated on the 1st of each month, adding all changes and new ratings of every rated on the planet.

In 2015 Rene Dube as the former President of NCF, and Alamanda Lauti as the General Secretary established contact with Mr Jamie Kenmure, where they initiated the first steps of the FIDE membership application. This set the ball rolling in the direction of NCF developments to upgrade our standards of Nauru chess to the international arena.

The Oceania Chess Confederate (OCC) approved an initial grant to enable the basic development phases of NCF/FIDE membership at the request of Jamie Kenmure, who has taken the role of Nauru’s Ratings Officer. However, throughout the months of dialogue with NCF, the program suffered some setbacks and was rescheduled three times due to the circumstances revolving around our personal lifestyle.
