Nauru Chess Federation Obtains first Licenced Arbiter

Nauru's First Licensed Chess Arbiter - (National Arbiter -FIDE)

Mr Ricko Depaune has become the first Licenced National Arbiter for the Nauru Chess Federation and was the appointed Chief Arbiter for the Nauru Rating Tournament held in Nauru -April 2017.  Also see our blogspot story for the rating tournament.

Jamie Kenmure, the Ratings Officer for Nauru did not just bring Nauru the opportunity to get a FIDE rating.  He provided Nauru the opportunity to gain qualification as Arbiters.

Arbiters are Chess referees, they monitor tournament games and can disqualify or award players based on FIDE rulings.  The Arbiter seminar was held over one day with the ratings officer going over the fundamentals of game play and tournament rules.  An exam was provided the following day and all...  Yes ALL eleven of the attendees passed.

Each of the participant can now purchase an FA-License which would be recognised as FIDE official.

The Arbiter Seminar and Exam was held over two days at the Nauru College, a courtesy of the Acting Principal Miss Miriam.  Tubwa kor Nauru College for providing the venue to host tournaments, meetings and seminars for the Federation.

Ricko Depaune, also the NFC President is currently the only licensed Arbiter on Nauru. This responsibility had excluded him from the ratings tournament as FIDE policy for any Chief Arbiter of a running tournament cannot participate as a player.

After visiting Nauru Media, Ricko and Jamie went to see the Parliament building, they were fortunate enough that Livingstone Hiram assigned one staff to guide a tour of the building and the parliament chamber with a rich history of politics, culture and constituency.

NCF had also managed to set up a meeting with Madam Secretary for Education Dr Maria Gaiyubu. Jamie Kenmure had to dress up in his best suit, and put his presentation face on to convince the Doctor to support introducing Chess into the school curriculum.  Fortunately the Secretary already understood the potential of Chess as an early education tool to build young minds to become more disciplined, focused, analytical, forward thinking and efficient problem solvers.

Jamie also visited the Nauru Airlines Country Manager Limay Uera to express that support for NCF will reap benefits in promotions at the Chess Olympiad in 2018.

NOC was full flat out occupied with ONOC consultants all week and could not slot in NCF to discuss support NCF as an accepted member of the FIDE, ACF and OCC.  Marcus Stephen the President of NOC offered his apologies and advised that NCF forward our queries and recommendations to the NOC General Secretary.
